Proton Motor serves stationary and automotive as well as maritime application areas and railway traffic with holistic energy supply concepts. Applications for buses, commercial vehicles, trains, ships and stationary power generation are part of the company`s competence portfolio respectively a sign of entrepreneurial innovation strength.

From 2022, Proton Motor is offering a new service for eco-friendly commercial vehicle conversion including holistic vehicle considerations and system integration with engineering partner “Lauer & Weiss” GmbH!

Proton Motor co-operates with the Stuttgart-based engineering service provider “Lauer & Weiss GmbH” in the field of vehicle design and system integration. The new service is aimed at OEMs, vehicle integrators and retrofitters from both on-highway and off-highway market. A complete package is offered, from fuel cell hybrid system concept development to planning, integration and series introduction. The customers receive the dimensioning and selection with regard to fuel cell system, battery size/type and hydrogen storage system, embedded in the vehicle control and power management concept.

In addition, vehicle manufacturers or fleet operators can have conversions concerning drive technologies planned by Lauer & Weiss directly via the subsidiary Green Power Systems GmbH. The focus is on basic electric high-voltage vehicles with batteries or alternative range extenders such as biogas or LNG as well as on complete fuel cell vehicles. For this purpose, Lauer & Weiss has founded its “Green Power Systems” company, which is accelerating the conversion of basic electric high-voltage vehicles with batteries in addition to fuel cell, LNG and biogas technologies.

The drive concept in the power range 21 kW to 213 kW for electrified commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses based on hydrogen-based range extension is implemented with the HyRange® fuel cell system in conjunction with a battery. This makes it possible to meet the requirements in terms of range, payload and costs – with zero emissions and low-noise drive.

HyRange® avoids noise and pollutant emissions, for which the vehicle is predestined for use in urban areas – such as for waste collection applications. In the context of the EU-funded project “REVIVE” (Refuse Vehicle Innovation and Validation in Europe), Proton Motor is currently commissioned with HyRange® production for “E-Trucks Europe” with regard to garbage trucks.

The HyRange® Range Extender hydrogen fuel cell system for battery-electric commercial vehicles is an effective support for applications where the existing battery capacity is insufficient. The system was developed as a modular solution to ensure broad applicability on different platforms. During operation, only water vapour is produced in addition to electricity and heat. The perfect zero-emission solution for urban areas!

Eco-friendly vehicles are the subject of lively debate in the automotive industry, as they offer drivers the freedom and efficiency of an ordinary vehicle without harming the environment through internal combustion engines. Notwithstanding this, the number of emission-free passenger car models is still low in many European cities. Less than five per cent of the vehicles registered on Europe’s roads are powered by electric motors, which make conventional petroleum-based fuels obsolete.

Proton Motor has supplied the international automotive supplier “Magna Steyr” with an individually designed HyRange® hydrogen fuel cell system for a new hybrid vehicle. This is called the “Fuel Cell Range Extended Electric Vehicle” – or “FC REEV” for short. Unlike a conventional hybrid engine, which relies on a combination of petrol or diesel and electric drive, the “FC REEV” model is operated both electrically and with hydrogen, thus achieving an emission-free hybrid drive.

The appeal of a hybrid vehicle with a range of up to 500 kilometres without refuelling and a top speed of 130 km/h (or 80 miles) is the choice between eco-friendly electric propulsion – for example in inner-city areas – or petrol and diesel if things need to go faster. This approach has been retained in the “FC REEV”, but petrol and diesel fuel have been replaced by hydrogen using the HyRange® system. Thus, the same low-noise electric motor type can continue to be used, while environmentally harmful fossil fuels are not used.
