Our Company History

1998

Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH was founded on 1 January 1998 from "Magnet-Motor GmbH", which had already existed since 1994.
2001

Commissioning of the world's first fuel cell powered forklift truck at Munich Airport.
2006

IPO of Proton Motor Power Systems plc as parent company of Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH on the AIM market (Alternative Investment Market) of the London Stock Exchange (code: PPS).
2007

Relocation of Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH from Starnberg to Puchheim near Munich. The world's first triple hybrid forklift truck was also presented at the opening ceremony of the new company headquarters.
2008

Within the EU-funded Zemship project, the world's first fuel cell-powered passenger ferry "Alsterwasser" was built. Until 2014, the 50 kW Proton Motor fuel cell ensured emission-free and silent transport of tourists in the Port of Hamburg.
2009

Proton Motor and Škoda Electric a.s. present the world's first public bus with Triple Hybrid® drive system, consisting of batteries, supercaps and fuel cells.
2013

Expansion of the hydrogen infrastructure at the company headquarters in Puchheim with a hydrogen tank.
2013

Presentation of the world's first electric commercial vehicle powered in parallel by battery and fuel cell in the 7.5 to 12 tonne weight class.
2014

World record drive from Munich to Berlin with the electric 7.5t truck Newton, equipped with the HyRange® hydrogen fuel cell system for range extension.
2015

Signing of the co-operation agreement between Proton Motor and the DB Bahnbau Group to install fuel cell-based uninterruptible emergency power systems in the railway sector.
2015

Expansion of the product range to include battery UPS systems and solar battery storage systems through the integration of Spower GmbH.
2016

The world's first energy self-sufficient apartment house in Switzerland, which supplies itself via self-produced hydrogen from solar power and a fuel cell from Proton Motor.
2017

Delivery of a hydrogen fuel cell power plant as a container solution for the energy supply of parts of the port on the Scottish Orkney Islands.
2018

Anniversary celebration "20 years of Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH".
2019

Agreement with Škoda Electric a.s. for co-operation in the development, sale and maintenance of fuel cell electric buses.
2019

Commissioning of the "Fit-4-AMandA" stack manufacturing robot to increase production capacity up to 5,000 fuel cell units per year.
2020

Record first quarter with incoming orders of EUR 6.4 million.
2020

On-time delivery of the APEX Group's order despite the global Corona situation for the new hydrogen power plant in Rostock-Laage.
2021

In the summer of 2021, Proton Motor delivered the tailor-made hydrogen fuel cell system "HyRail" with an installed output of 214 kW, consisting of two fully redundant systems of 107 kW each, to the Austrian customer "Linsinger Maschinen Gesellschaft mbH" with its world first hydrogen rail milling train.

For the energy group "Shell", Proton Motor successfully finalised the order for the product innovation development of the grid-self-sufficient hydrogen fuel cell power plant "HyShelter 240" in autumn 2021.
2022

For the largest European shipbuilding group "Fincantieri S.p.A.", based in Trieste, two fully redundant "HyShip 72" product designs were primarily adapted for the power supply of the electric powertrain and other consumers of the "ZEUS" ship (Zero Emission Ultimate Ship).

Proton Motor Fuel Cell aligns brand product portfolio: Consolidation under new Hy-brand strengthens the fuel cell product family.

The UK parent company "Proton Motor Power Systems plc" of "Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH" has signed a fifteen-year lease agreement for a modern 13,500m² production facility. This additional location will be used successively from the second quarter of 2023 to substantially expand the company`s manufacturing and testing and capacity.

With a quarter of a century of experience, the internationally active “Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH” is Europe’s expert for energy solutions with CleanTech technologies and a specialist for the development of hydrogen fuel cells “Made in Germany”. The company, which currently has more than 100 employees, is a 100 percent operating subsidiary of “Proton Motor Power Systems plc”, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, which has been listed on the London Stock Exchange since October 2006 with the green, sustainable energy share “PPS”.
